Youth network announces replication programme |
|
The ICA Youth Network will be launching a scheme to replicate existing cooperatives and create new youth cooperatives worldwide. Eight projects will be selected as part of this programme, which is being funded by a donation from the International Summit of Cooperatives. Read more

Youth entrepreneurship at global level: where do cooperatives fit in?
|
|
Young people are three times more likely than adults to be jobless. More than 64 million young people are unemployed worldwide, and 145 million young workers are living in poverty. Two reports by CICOPA looked at the role of cooperatives in addressing these issues. Read more

GYF20 adopts Youth Agenda for Advocacy |
|
Participants in the Global Youth Forum on Cooperative Entrepreneurship (Malaysia, 3-7 February 2020) set out an ambitious agenda for advocacy. Adopted at the forum, the agenda takes into account the current political discourses around the Future of Work as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Read more

School cooperatives in Malaysia |
|
During their stay in Kuching participants in the Global Youth Forum had the chance to visit Tun Abang Haji Openg, a local school, which runs its own cooperatives. Schools across the country have set up cooperatives that are managed by pupils and teachers. This helps pupils learn how to run their own enterprises. Creathon 2020: Singaporean youth pitch ideas for cooperative enterprises |
|
The Singapore National Co-operative Federation (SNCF) held Creathon 2020, its first business challenge event for young people, on 18-19 January. Around 200 young people from across the country took part in this business challenge with two categories, secondary school students and youth in the age group of 17-35. Read more

The ICA's story: a journey back in time |
|
The countdown has begun for the World Cooperative Congress in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, which is expected to gather around 2,000 cooperators to mark the 125th anniversary of the ICA. The Congress will be an opportunity for the global movement to celebrate an important milestone for the ICA, which was founded in August 1895 after a Cooperative Congress in London. Read more |

ICA-AP turns 60 |
|
This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the International Cooperative Alliance in the Asia-Pacific region (ICA-AP). Over the past 60 years, ICA-AP has worked to unite and represent cooperative movements in the region and globally, with the support of members, aid agencies, and governments. ICA-AP is planning a number of celebratory events during this landmark year. Read more |

ILO COOP celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2020 |
|
The International Labour Organisation’s Cooperative Unit – ILO COOP – turns 100 this year. To mark its anniversary on 23 March, the unit will host a celebratory event at its library in Geneva, featuring speakers from the government, workers’ and employers’ organisations, cooperative institutions and academia. A series of reports highlighting cooperative innovations in the platform economy and in responding to the refugee crisis will also be launched at the event. Read more |

The ICA-EU partnership on international cooperative development (#coops4dev) has launched a new website to celebrate its fourth anniversary. The website embeds an interactive global map that allows the user to consult the latest results of two exciting long-term research projects: a mapping of cooperative actors and a legal framework analysis. A number of ICMIF members have signed up to the UN supported Principles for Responsible Investment.The six Principles for Responsible Investment are a voluntary and aspirational set of investment principles that offer a menu of possible actions for incorporating environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues into investment practice for asset managers and asset owners.

Uruguay approves Law on Social and Solidarity Economy |
|
On December 10 the Uruguayan Senate ratified the Social and Solidarity Economy Bill. The law provides an impetus for the creation and development of social and solidarity economy enterprises, reaffirming the importance of the cooperative movement in the co-management of public policy. The Uruguayan Confederation of Cooperative Entities has been a promoter of reflection and debate on the issue. Read more |

How Swedish housing cooperatives are promoting sustainability |
The Secretary General of Cooperative Housing International (CHI), Julie LaPalme, was in Stockholm to meet with two of CHI’s largest members, HSB Riksforbund and Riksbyggen. Both cooperatives prioritise environmental sustainability and have been named Most Sustainable Company in Sweden for two consecutive years.

14th ICA-AP Cooperative Research Conference takes place in Australia |
The 14th ICA-AP Cooperative Research Conference took place as a side event within the 2nd ICA-AP Forum on Development of Cooperatives in Pacific Islands. The conference was attended by over 100 participants from 12 countries, who shared their experiences on issues related to cooperation among cooperatives and mutuals.
