#IYC2025: Building a better world through decent work
The eighth UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG8) promotes ‘sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all’. As people-centred and member-owned and controlled businesses, cooperatives are well placed to accelerate this action.
The theme announced for #CoopsDay 2025 is 'Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions for a Better World', and one of these solutions is ensuring employment is fair and equitable, regardless of the region or sector. Cooperative enterprises are owned by their members and driven by values, not profit, and worldwide support over 280 million livelihoods: nearly one in ten workers globally.
By aligning economic activity with democratic participation and social purpose, cooperatives advance the vision of decent work and inclusive growth at the heart of SDG8. The SDG8 policy brief delves deeper into the challenges and solutions.

How are cooperatives accelerating SDG8?
The resilience of cooperatives during crises and their collective approach to navigating shifting labour markets reflect the adaptability of the cooperative model as the world faces the challenges of growing inequality, disengagement, climate disruption and technological change.
From moto-taxi drivers in Rwanda to agricultural workers in Guatemala – as well as worker cooperatives in India and social cooperatives in Italy – cooperative businesses around the world are putting people at the heart of enterprise, to shape sustainable and inclusive communities that help to build a better world through decent work.

An asset for society? The social economy hub that aims to build a better world
Spain’s Basque Country is known for its culture, language and food – and as home to the world’s largest worker co-op, Mondragón, and nearly 4,000 other co-op enterprises. At the end of May, the region hosted the first ASETT Forum, organised by the Arizmendiarrietta Social Economy Think Tank (ASETT), which gathered co-ops and mutuals from around the world to kickstart a global network focused on the study and promotion of the social economy.
Over 400 people from more than 30 countries joined the event in Donostia-San Sebastian, with the aim of answering challenges and exploring how to replicate some of the world’s co-operative success stories. ASETT also launched its Call to Action, an open call to the world that defends the social economy as a driver of transformation in the face of the major challenges of our time: inequality, social exclusion, and the climate emergency.
